In preceding articles, we saw the innumerable reference to existence of airplanes in Ramayana, Mahabharata and other scriptures. In this article, we will go through
Innumerable references to aircrafts, ships and nuclear weapons in oldest Indian texts ‘Vedas’. Despite of Innumerable verses to airplanes, it is not surprising to observe that Mainstream academicians and scientists choose to ignore the revelations of Vedas as they are not willing to accept the fact that ancient humans especially Indians were many times more advanced than modern humans.

Vedic airplanes- the only airplanes to run by mind power
Vedic technologies were short of physical mechanical devices like nuts, bolts and microchips. They instead relied more on controlling objects by mind, mystic and sonic powers. Creating a powerful sonic vibration by chanting some mantras were their way of triggering a terribly destructive weapon like that of today’s nuclear weapons.
Ancient Vimanas worked mostly on mantric and tantric power than yantric (mechanical) power, as employed by modern airplanes. Sage Narada traveled from one planet to another at speed of light just by invoking the name of lord Vishnu. Patanjali yoga claims of astral and interplanetary travel through the attainment of siddhis by yoga and meditation.

In fact in satyayuga, all men had same mystical power which they gradually lost as humans lost their inner purity by becoming more and more materialistic in their daily activities. As the yugas advanced, humans lost the technologies and much-needed mystical power to construct and fly machines by mind power.

Classification of ancient vehicles
Rig Veda, the oldest book of mankind has many references to popular vehicles used as a mode of transportation during the ancient times. Broadly, vehicles were classified into different types depending upon the medium of transport and fuel type used.
  1)    Jalayan - a vehicle designed to operate in air and water (Rig Veda 6.58.3);
2)    Kaara- a vehicle that operates on ground and in water. (Rig Veda 9.14.1);
3)    Tritala- a vehicle consisting of three stories. (Rig Veda 3.14.1);
4)    TrichakraRatha - a three-wheeled vehicle designed to operate in the air. (Rig Veda 4.36.1);
5)    VaayuRatha- a gas or wind-powered chariot. (Rig Veda 5.41.6);
6)    VidyutRatha- a vehicle that operates on power. (Rig Veda 3.14.1).

Classification of airplanes
Vedas mentions flying chariots of different shapes and configurations, some with mechanical engines and some with mystical flying animals. For Ex: the sun god traverses the sky every day on his seven radiant horses.
All demigods descended on intricately designed flying machines to physically meet and bless their worshippers.
Broadly, flying machines are classified into two categories:
1) Manmade aircrafts with birdlike wings, and
2) unstreamlined mysterious aircrafts(UFO’s)designed by demigods and supernatural beings. Ex: flying machine of King Salva who attacked lord Krishna

And these aircrafts were generally of four types:
  1)    Single or two-passenger aircraft;
2)    Huge airships for interplanetary pleasure trips;
3)    Huge military aircraft for warfare;
4)    Self-sufficient flying cities (‘space stations”) for indefinite stay in space.

Prototype model of vedic airplane

Earliest airplane models
Sage Agastya and Bharadwaja were two of the earliest scientists of Vedic age that developed the lore of aircraft construction. There is detailed description on two types of airplane model in “Agastya Samhita”.
  1)   “Chatra”: (umbrella or balloon) to be filled with hydrogen. Use of electricity in the process of extracting of hydrogen from water is also described in elaborate detail. This is stated to be a very basic model used by soldiers and residents of a fort or ashram to escape from fire or attack from enemies.
2)    Vimanadvigunam: vimanadvigunam in Sanskrit means of a lower order (of aircraft). Description of this flying vehicle closely resembles modern parachute.It could be opened and shut by operating chords.

Rigveda quotes on scientists and inventions
There are also many verses in Rigveda that encourages the scientists and researchers to invent more flying aircrafts, ships and mechanical devices that can move in earth, water and air. In return, society should support the scientists with conveyance; comfortable facilities and numerous benefits. Below are some verses of the same
  1)    All human beings should make efforts to be in the company of the enlightened savants and obtain the knowledge of all kinds of physical sciences. Rig -Veda (5-48-2)
2)    Scientists in the Vedas are learned persons. They should be provided with house, bright and splendid conveyance and other facilities (R.V 1-140-1).
        Similar to benefits provided by American government to NASA scientists, Vedic scientists were bestowed with numerous benefits and comforts.
  3)    Airplanes, machines, cars, vehicles, ships etc., are very useful for rapid movement and for the development of trade across the globe and for enjoyment of mankind. For discovering such vehicles, the scientists should study the properties of water, fire, and air (R.V 1-3-1, 2).
        Rigveda recommend scientists to learn the properties of three elements before inventing their vehicles. Moreover, it advises individual scientists to focus on only one element and invent vehicle for that element only.

  4)    Those who understand the characteristics and various properties of air can discover vehicles for quick movement like airplanes (R.V 1-5-3).
5)    For the manufacture of vehicles moving in the air, need for nails, 12 fellies (ores), wheels, three axles, fire and water are mentioned in R.V 1-164-18.
6)    Ribhus should manufacture these aircrafts and other vehicles in such a way that sweet waters, food and other requisite articles are kept in these vehicles (R.V 1-118-1).

Encouraging scientists to research all fields
Furthermore, there are many revolutionary verses on the use of airplanes in yajurveda.
" O royal skilled engineer, construct sea-boats, propelled on water by our experts, and airplanes, moving and flying upward, after the clouds that reside in the mid-region, that fly as the boats move on the sea, that fly high over and below the watery clouds. Be thou, thereby, prosperous in this world created by the Omnipresent God, and flier in both air and lightning." (Yajur-veda 10.19).
Also, Consider the below two verses where the scientists are encouraged to research on various fields like medicine, engineering, geology, aviation, navigation etc.
"O disciple, a student in the science of government,  sail in oceans in steamers, fly in the air in airplanes, know God the creator through the Vedas, control thy breath through yoga, through astronomy know the functions of day and night, know all the Vedas, Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva, by means of their constituent parts."
"Through astronomy, geography, and geology, go thou to all the different countries of the world under the sun. Mayest thou attain through good preaching to statesmanship and artisanship, through medical science obtain knowledge of all medicinal plants, through hydrostatics learn the different uses of water, through electricity understand the working of ever lustrous lightening. Carry out my instructions willingly."  (Yajur-veda  6.21).

Scientists should maintain nobility and high virtues
In above verses, good doesn’t mean material enjoyment or sensory pleasures. Good means the activities that are both material, spiritual and part of social ethics and morality. In all the hymns relating to physical sciences, inner and outer worlds of the scientists and industrialists are harmonized.
Below is what Rigveda explicitly states on the nobility of scientists:-
  1)    A scientist should be master of true virtues, noble actions, good temper and both spiritually and materially wealthy. He should be able to go across the path leading to distant places quickly like the mind and electricity with the help of aircraft, space ships etc. He should be self-reliant R.V (1-71-9).
2)    A few guide lines have been given to Ribhus and Ashvinaus to have a peaceful disposition, humility, self-control, truthfulness and be devotees of God, obedient and disciplined (R.V 1-116-7).

Airplanes was meant for nation building and wealth creation
Below rig veda verse states the building of ships and airplanes for transportation benefit, Wealth creation and protection of the nation.
  1)    Building of ships and airplanes are a source of national wealth, comfort and for going across the world (R.V 1-116-3).
2)    These vehicles bring prosperity for the people of the country of manufacture and also for the people in other parts of the world. (R.V 1-71-9)

Inventions was meant for prosperity of humans
Sages encouraged scientists to make new inventions for the betterment and material prosperity of the society.
  1)    Ribhus should learn about such vehicles from savants who are either Adityas or Rurais. After learning they should aim at making the entire mankind happy and prosperous (R.V.  1-132-5).
2)    Scientific knowledge is needed for enlightened life and good enjoyment (R.V 1-85-
3)    Those businessmen and traders who use these Rathas and Vaj-gatau (very high-speed vehicles and aircrafts) for spiritual and material profits bring material prosperity to the country.

No doubt he was referring to Hinduism

Inventing together as a team
Below verse advised scientists of different fields to work together as a team towards the common noble goal of society upliftment and spiritual cum materialistic prosperity
Ribhus (industrialists and manufacturers) as well as ashvinaus should jointly manufacture aircraft and other vehicles for movement in firmament, earth and sea. They should perform this noble job of manufacture without any pride based on the philosophy of Idd Nan Mmam- nothing for self all for society, which is Vedic concept of enlightened liberalism akin to Aristotle’s enlightened selfishness and mutual harmony (R.V 1-87-2).

Creating complex machines and alloys
Below rig veda verse states the making of complex alloys, chemicals and complicated mechanical contrivances.
When wind, water and pieces of earth (steel, iron and other elements and alloys) are used methodically in the vehicles and driven by truthful artisans of righteous conduct and nature, wonderful results are achieved, like mother arranging everything for a child who is source of a great joy (R.V 1-116-1).

Inventing high-speed aircraft and ships
Vedas not only mentions the constructions of aircrafts, ships and spaceships but also their remarkable speeds.
Ship travel at a speed to cross one main ocean to the other in 3 days and 3 nights-Rig-Veda 1-116-4
For going around the entire globe by sea and crossing all the oceans, the duration of 11 days and 11 nights is mentioned (R.V 1-34-11).
Four boats should be tied to the ships for safety (R.V 1-82-6).
For achieving higher speed in airplanes, three sets of wheels are advised (R.V 1-34-1, 9).
Aircrafts should be tri-columned with three sets of mechanical wheels(R.V 1-118-12)
Aero planes could fly in the firmament and acquire a speed to go across the world in four hours i.e. thrice a day (R.V 1-43-2).
If day is translated to 24 hours, then the earth can be traversed three times a day. This means that the aircrafts of modern generation needs more research and upgrades as they are running slower than the ones invented during the Vedic era.

Summary
As you can see above, if we go through intricate details of description laid out in Vedic scriptures, one has to accept that these verses on incredible aircrafts are not the imagination of any author. Moreover, sci-fi fiction or imagination is not needed in spiritual treatise like Rigveda. Therefore, flying Vimanas undoubtedly is an inseparable part of Indian history reflecting the great mechanical inventions and advanced technological past of ancient India.
