Garbh means ‘foetus’ and Sanskar means “educating the mind”. So,
Garbha sanskar literally means shaping the personality and character of the unborn inside the womb of mother. As the Sanskrit phrase says “Sanskaro hi gunaantaradhanam”, meaning “Replace bad qualities by good ones”, Garbha Sanskar is aimed at altering, polishing, finishing, casting & educating the unborn right inside the womb of mother.

Origin of garbha sanskar
Having a virtuous, talented and healthy child, who can face hostile challenges of increasingly complex lifestyles, is a dream of all parents. Ancient Indian medicine ‘Ayurveda’ recognized the need for the mental, spiritual and physical preparation of the pregnant mother three months prior to conception and so, came up with a guiding theory called as "Supraja janan" or eu-maternity. Also known as Garbha sanskar, it starts with pinda shuddhi or the purification of the gametes (sperm and ovum) where the couple is advised to be calm and mentally/emotionally/physically/spiritually stable by avoiding unhealthy habits like eating spicy or inorganic foods, thinking negatively and host of other factors. Modern science has just started validating this 10000+ year old secrets of ‘Garbha sanskar’ compiled by Vedic sages.

Why garbha sanskar is important?
In olden days, garbha sanskar was essentially meant to raise sattva guna (spiritual and positive thoughts) in unborn baby right from the time of conception. Garbha sanskar states that the development of the child character and personality takes place as soon as he is conceived in the womb of mother. Garbha sanskar is all about the balanced emotional, mental and physical state of the growing unborn child. Excess of anything is harmful. So, the mother should not overdo garbha sanskar and must relax for a minimum of eight hours in a day.

Emotions and thoughts of parents matters
According to Garbha Sanskar, baby is able to sense and respond to music, nature, thoughts, emotions etc. Although it may sound strange, Baby also feels what the mother feels and reacts according to the mental state of the mother. In fact, mother state of mind plays a crucial role in defining the personality of the child.

If a child is born handicapped or ill-formed, it is either due to the negative reactions/actions of parents or due to the bad karma of either parents or the child in previous birth. Thoughts, actions and emotions of parents plays a crucial role in shaping the character of the child.
For Ex: According to vastu-Shastra, even if you have a perfect home with all vastu rules, happiness is not guaranteed as it also depends upon thoughts, karma(deeds) and qualities(Gunas) of the individuals residing in home. Vastu reduces the impact of negative thoughts and actions but it’s very insignificant as there is a consistent need for balanced actions and thoughts in life.

Importance of music and mantras in garbha sanskar
Soothing mantras of goddess sarawati and divine music of lord Krishna flute are said to the best ones to listen during pregnancy. Chanting Mantras and meditation relaxes the soul of both child & mother and enhances the development of mind. Special devotional CD’s of garbha sangeet is readily available online and in Indian musical stores.

  • Negative thoughts, stress, work or any activity that can cause frustration and angriness should be avoided at all costs.
  • Though there is an enzyme in the placenta and fetus of mother that protect the born child from dangerous chemicals released during stress, prolonged exposure to  negative emotions breaks down these protection, thereby affecting the child dearly

Why natural delivery is advised over cesarean delivery
Baby should be delivered naturally and operation should be considered only if there is a risk of life to either child or mother. During natural delivery, child consumes the good bacteria inside the body of the mother which kind of strengthen the immune system and resistance to allergens. Babies born from operation have a weak immune system and are very vulnerable to external environment.
Wives should express their deepest level of happiness to their husband as they are nurturing their sperm

DNA of mother resonates with DNA of child
First sound heard by unborn child inside the womb is mother’s heartbeat. This is why when the crying child is bought near to mother’s heart, child becomes calm and stops crying. Even when the child is miles away, mother can feel the emotions and feelings of the child. This is the power gifted to only some mothers whose DNA resonates with DNA of the child. Sanskrit mantras that have a resonating frequency of 1.618 ratio (golden ratio) assists in attunement of mother DNA with child DNA.

    Stories on garbha sanskar
Indian scriptures are filled with plenty of stories depicting the working of Garbha sanskar. Some of them are:-
    Abhimanyu
The foremost and best-known example of Garbha sanskar comes from the world’s longest epic Mahabharata.
When Arjuna's wife was pregnant with baby Abhimanyu in her womb, her brave husband Arjuna was busy devising the Chakravyuh formation for the upcoming war. Bored by Arjuna explanation of Chakravyuh, Subhadra dozed off to sleep. After seeing subhadra in REM sleep mode, Arjuna stopped his explanation in between and therefore, Abhimanyu was unable to grasp the knowledge of exiting the Chakravyuh formation. During the battle of kurukshetra, Abhimanyu recollected his father narration of Chakravyuh and successfully breached the Chakravyuh formation of the kauravas. However, due to incomplete knowledge, he failed to exit the Chakravyuh formation and died miserably inside the Chakravyuh formation.
    Prahlad

Prahlad was born to a father of demon dynasty. While he was inside the womb of his mother, his father was creating havoc on the demigods in heaven. Adhering to the suggestion of sage Narada, his mother listened to devotional stories and songs of lord Vishnu. Enchanted to the soothing prayers of lord Vishnu, prahlad became a devotee of lord Vishnu even before he was born. Not only this, despite of repeated persistence and murderous attempts by his father, prahlad didn’t renounce the worship of lord Vishnu and stood against the evil acts of his father. Ultimately, he became the prime cause behind the downfall of his father empire. He was the first earthly devotee to whom lord Vishnu gave his darshan and blessed him personally.

    Ashtavakra
Mother Sujata desired her son to be the most intelligent sage of her era. So, while she was pregnant, she would attend all the spiritual classes conducted by her husband ‘Kahoda‘. In one of the class, her husband messed up with the narration of one of the events. Divine words of baby Ashtavakra from inside the womb of her mother corrected the wrongly narrated story. But unable to bear the humiliation in front of everyone, father kahoda cursed his son to be born deformed. Ashtavakra was born handicapped but soon after attaining adolescence, out of his wit, knowledge and intelligence, he fixed his physical limitation and went onto become the most intelligent and handsome sage of his time.
    Vinayak Damodar Savarkar
It is said that mother of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, also known as “veer savarkar”, narrated courageous stories from Ramayana, Mahabharata and Maharana Pratap to her son when he was inside her womb. Right from his childhood, “Vinayak Damodar Savarkar” fought for Hindu nationalism against the British and Muslim leaders. He is the most respected freedom fighter in “Maharashtra” state of India.
