Airplanes or flying Vimanas of ancient India
Hinduism for long was regarded as a pagan religion in the west, courtesy of the poison injected to our translated scriptures by foreign missionaries and press clubs. Even mainstream academicians and scientists chose to ignore the revelations of Vedas as they were not willing to accept the fact that ancient humans, especially Indians, were many times more advanced than modern humans. However, in this era of information technology, nothing can be hidden from the educated genre and the real truth of Vedic texts is slowly reaching far and wide across each corner of the world. Over the next few articles, I will do my bit by going through innumerable scriptural references to airplanes of ancient India
Airplanes existed in ancient India?
Concept of travelling by air was fairly popular in ancient and medieval India much before the invention of modern airplanes by wright brothers. There are plenty of evidences that suggest the use of airplanes for interplanetary travels, wars, spiritual ceremonies, Rescue operations etc.
These airplanes were short of physical mechanical devices like nuts, bolts and microchips. They instead relied more on controlling objects by mind, mystic, tantric and sonic powers. After reading this and upcoming articles, you would be forced to believe that Ancient airplanes did existed and worked mostly on mantric and tantric power than yantric (mechanical) power as employed by modern airplanes.

Vimana or airplanes of ancient India
An airplane is called as vimana in Sanskrit, an ancient Vedic language and Hindi, modern Indian language. Indian literary texts are abundant with stories of heroes and demi-gods fighting in the sky on their beautifully carved flying vimana having highly advanced weapons of mass destruction. Verses of these scriptures indicates that ancient Indian civilization was superbly advanced and had contacts with extra-terrestrial visitors, whom they worshipped as demi-gods.
Symbolism of Vimanas in Hindu temples
It is interesting to note that long towers in Indian Hindu temples are also called Vimanas. Many temples in India are based on the designs of the Vimanas. For Example, Konark temple- a world heritage site, resembles the flying chariot of lord surya(Sun) God.
Word Vimana in Sanskrit actually means a flying vehicle that takes your mind away from the worldly limitations bounded by space and time. According to Vedic texts, Vimana is a physical medium to ascend higher state of consciousness towards the heavens, higher lokas and abode of gods. Having lost our mystical and tantric powers in the temptation of materialistic desires, human beings are now forever stuck on earth till the end of this yuga. Hence, elongated towers (vimanas) in Hindu temples, protruding from the bottom of the earth, serves as a symbolic message for all humans on earth of having lost our consciousness in materialistic pleasures thus dwelling away from the heavens and the higher lokas. Vimanas serves as a link between your world and world of gods and goddesses.

Turning away from the materialistic distractions of the mind, meditating in temple with elongated towers (Vimanas) would traverse you back on the path of higher lokas and abodes of gods.
Why Vedic airplanes are nowhere to be seen?
Ancient vimanas in the vedic and puranic literature is largely considered as a myth but if one attentively reads fabulous details of capabilities and construction, well supported by modern theories of propulsion system, one would easily agree on the existence of advanced airplanes in civilizations of India, Egypt, Mayans and Mesopotamia.

To understand the outstanding technology and remarkable invention of Vedic era, we must first apprehend the division of earth time into different periods. Each day of Brahma (Creator) is divided into thousand cycles of four yugas
1) Satya-yuga(1,728,000 years of Golden age with extraordinary long life and mystic powers like becoming microspically small or tall as a mountain, flying in sky, interstellar travel etc.)
2) Treta-yuga(1,296,000 years with decreased purity and less mystic powers)
3) Dvapara-yuga(864,000 years with even less purity and mystics powers limited to only few yogis and evolved warriors)
4) Kali-yuga(432,000 years of dark age and yogis with mystics power to be found nowhere)
During the age of satya-yuga, there was no need of airplanes as all humans had the mystical power to travel from one place to another.
But during the age of Treta-yuga, mystical power for interstellar travel was lost and barring some exceptional yogis, humans needed artificial objects like airplanes to travel from one planet to another. To reach out to devotees on earth, Lord Brahma assisted deities of different lokas (planets) by gifting specially designed vimanas. Some were beautifully crafted with wings of peacock, swan, and eagles etc whereas others were drastically different like UFOs and spacecraft of 21st century Hollywood movies. In Treta-yuga, men were adept in mantras or potent hymns. Thus, the vimanas of that age were powered by means of knowledge of mantras. Airplanes were controlled by mind power through chanting of mantras that acted as a password for authorization.
In Dvapara-yuga, under the grasp of materialistic pleasures, humans lost most of the evolved spiritual knowledge but developed considerable knowledge of tantric rituals. Thus, the vimanas of Dvapara-yuga were powered by the use of tantric knowledge.
In Kali-yuga, knowledge of both mantra and tantra are deficient. Thus, the vimanas of our age are known as kritaka, meaning artificial or mechanical.
As we are now living in the Dark Age (Kali-yuga), our spiritual understanding is limited and the chances of gaining mystical power though yoga and meditation is pretty insignificant than what were possible during the ages before Kali-yuga.
Hence, flying machines with mind power is not possible in this yuga. We need highly sophisticated machines and mechanical contrivances to travel from one place to another.

Types of vimanas
Thus, there are three main types of vimanas, according to the characteristics of three degrading yugas. Vimanas are broadly classified into three types:
1) 25 models of Mantrika vimanas - Treta Yuga(powered by chanting mantras)
2) 56 models of Tantrica vimanas - Dwapara Yuga(powered by chanting mantras or magic)
3) 25 models of Kritakaah vimanas - Kali yuga(powered by mechanical engines)
In regard to shape and construction of these vimanas, there is not much difference between any of these vimanas, but only in the way how they are powered or propelled, which would be by mantras, tantras, or mechanical engines.
Evidences of Vimanas
Sanskrit texts has many references to gods arriving from interstellar planets in vimanas equipped with highly advanced deadly weapons, fighting battles with cruel earthly kings and rakshasas(Demons). Developed by highly advanced denizens of higher lokas, these vimanas had the distinct features of travelling in space between different planets without the use of any fuel.
Egyptians Vimanas
Broadly, these flying vimanas can be categorized as
1) ManMade: Aircrafts similar to our modern airplanes.
2) Alien: Aircraft not of our world(UFO’s or spacecraft) and developed in other planets by devas(Deities) or demons(Rakshas)
Detailed description of first type of aircraft can be found in medieval Sanskrit texts that include the design, architecture, engine specification and other mechanical measures. Though not in details, second type of aircrafts are referred across many ancient texts like Ramayana, Mahabharata, several puranas etc. Some of the evidences on such vimanas are:-
1) Numerous Vedic texts containing detailed references to Vimanas including the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Satapathya Brahmana, Markandeya Purana, Vishnu Purana, Bhagavata Purana, the Harivamsa, Rig-veda, Yajur-veda, Atharva-veda,vyamanika shastra, the Yuktilkalpataru of Bhoja etc. According to various literary descriptions in these texts, vimanas were of different shapes, sizes and features similar to the different aircraft models we see today in top 10 advanced countries. I would be writing five more articles to quote references to vimanas from such scriptures.

2) Inscription on royal edicts of emperor Ashoka is by far the most authentic evidence in support to existence of Vimanas. Just after converting to Buddhism, King Ashoka of the great maurya empire, got hand of some ancient scripts on Vimanas. He started "Secret Society of the Nine Unknown Men", a group of great scientists who were assigned the task of researching on those scripts. However, most of their research was kept secret since Ashoka preached non-violence after the Kanishka war and was afraid of the destructive use of advanced military aircrafts like it happened thousands of years ago during the era of Mahabharata. These nine great scientists wrote nine books in total including the great book on gravitation. However, none of these secret books were found till today but researchers are quite hopeful that books would be discovered later somewhere in India, china and Tibet as the ongoing archeological search is carried out in different parts of India and south Asia.
3) Ancient manuscript kept at Calcutta Sanskrit College refers to flying aerial cars and ships that followed the shortest route from India over the western sea i.e. Arabian Sea - Africa - Atlantic ocean - Latin America/Mexico. This indicates that ancient airplanes and ships had the technology to fly against unfavorable trade winds that is generally observed along this route. Modern ships of our generation follow the longest route over the Pacific Ocean via Indonesia because of the favorable trade winds and equatorial currents for easy navigation.
4) As suggested by scriptural references of Mahabharata, Maya Danava is believed to be the king of present country of Peru and adjoining countries (pataal desa) and this is evident from the recent discoveries of airplane landing sites in the Pampas of Nazca. This Nazca lines of peru is said to be the landing area for air vehicles of Sauvikas(Sanskrit word for pilot)

Number of air routes
Not only there is mention of vimanas in our scriptures but also the number of air routes.
According to Shownaka, there are 5, 19,800 air ways traversed by the Vimanas of the seven lokas(Bhooloka, Bhuvarloka, Suvarloka, Maholoka, Janoloka, Tapoloka and Satyaloka) inthe five atmospheric regions of the sky. These five atmospheric layers are Rekhaapathaha(7,03,00,800 air routes), Mandala(20,08,00200 air routes), Kakshaya(2,09,00,300 air routes), Shakti(10,01,300 air routes) and Kendra(30,08,200 air routes).
In addition to air routes, Shownaka also describes the kind of food to eat, clothes to wear and the metals to avoid in Vimanas. It also describes the various types of lenses, mirrors and mechanical yantras that should be installed to shield vimanas.
Ancient revolving satellites
Decades before the arrival of artificial satellites and aircrafts, James Churchward, the English scholar of the British Empire in India said
1 -India invented machines that revolved the earth (i.e., satellites):
"Their fuel is drawn from the air in a very simple and cheap way. The motor is something like a modern turbine: it works from one chamber to another and does not stop or stall unless switched off. If nothing happens it continues to function. The ship in which it is built could revolve as long as it liked around Earth, only falling when the parts of which it is made were burnt up.”
2) Surya siddhanta speaks of researchers and scientists who orbited the earth "below the moon and above the clouds”
“Giant satellites made of shiny metal and turning about an axis are described extensively in ancient Sanskrit texts, right down to their dimensions and interiors, as well as smaller craft that fly between them and the earth.”
Few quotes on vimanas
Some of the aerial cars are said to be so fast that even after going outside the orbit of earth, a faint noise of engines can be heard on earth
1) Colonel Olcott in a 1881 speech in Allahabad said
“ The ancient Hindus could navigate the air, and not only navigate it but fight battles in it like so many war-eagles, combating for the domination of the clouds. To be so perfect in aeronautics they must have known all the arts and sciences relating to the science, including the strata and currents of the atmosphere, the relative temperature, humidity, density and specific gravity of the various gases” -.
2) On flying machines of ancient Indians, Erich Von daniken, the father of ancient astronaut theory and author of many books including “chariots of the gods”, said "We must not be cowards as to dismiss such traditions as pointless myths and acclaim the authors’ poetic imaginations. The large number of similar accounts in ancient scriptures turns a suspicion into certainty: the ‘gods’ used A or H weapons from unknown flying objects. No, No, revered experts, you must accept it in the end. The stories of the chroniclers were not the products of their macabre imagination. What they handed down was once the stuff of experience, ghastly reality. "

Flying vimanas in other civilizations

Gold trinkets, remarkably similar to modern airplanes, estimated to be at least 1000 years old were found in an area covering Central America and coastal areas of South America
Destructive airplanes of atlanteans
Like most of the modern scientific aircrafts, ancient vimanas were also unfortunately use for destructive wars. Atlanteans known as Asvins in Vedic texts were perhaps the most advanced civilization with a highly advanced "cigar shaped" aircraft named “Vailixi” that dominated the ancient world. Vailixi had the unique capability of travelling underground, underwater and into interstellar space. They also had saucer shaped aircrafts that had the unique distinction of being used underwater like a submarine.

Do Vedic Vimanas exist now?
What I believe is ancient Vimanas as described in Vedic texts do exist in space but they exist in a different godly dimensions (4+ dimensions) that is invisible to the human eye. Some of the UFO’s seen around the world may be the interplanetary travelling aircrafts of other planets (Lokas), who for some purpose entered into earthly 3 dimensions and hence, was visible to the naked human eye.

Summary:
Conditioned to believe this kaliyuga as the “golden era of science”, it may be difficult for us to apprehend the superfluous technology that existed during the ancient times. With the passage of time and numerous natural disasters, these flying machines and associated secrets were eventually lost, similar to the case of 1000 year old rustles iron pillar of Delhi. Even after elaborate research on this iron pillar, scientists are unable to produce such an iron pillar. Therefore I end by saying that dismissing Vimanas as myth would be very foolish until we investigate the veracity of Indian texts.
