Interstellar travel and aerial flying chariots-Part 1

Very similar to modern science, Vedas says about the existence of multi-universe and multi-galaxies where the residents are blessed with powerful physic powers and highly advanced mechanized technology. Residents of such planets have the mystical power to leave the materialistic realm and journey into higher-dimensional spiritually-evolved planets. Normal humans, in absence of such mystical power, would never be successful to leave this universe no matter how much advanced airships, spaceships or spacecraft’s they develop in the next thousands of years or till the end of this universe.

Only mystics and advanced yogis can do interstellar travel
This is because in our universe, any material object would not cease to exist after it crosses the 3 earthly dimensions thus complying with Einstein theory of relativity that states “One cannot escape this universe as the space is curved back on itself. So if you travel on a rocket from one direction of earth, after a sufficiently long time due to space time continuum, you will return back to earth from another direction.”

In this and next article, we would learn about few ancient mystics who were successul in journeying into outer space due to the high-level of karma credit they gathered on mother earth. Note that no philosophers, researchers and scientists with all their advanced inventions would ever be successful to go outside of this universe. Only spiritually evolved mystics and advanced yogis with blessed divya drishti(divine perception) have the power to see what exist beyond our 3-dimensional world.

Sage narada using his mystical power to travel from planet to another

Consider the below verses that states the travel of mystics through milky way (Milky Way is known as Akash Ganga in Sanskrit, meaning “Celestial ganga river”)
“O King, when such a mystic passes over the Milky Way by the illuminating Susumna to reach the highest planet, Brahmaloka, he goes first to Vaisvanara>, the planet of the deity of fire, wherein he becomes completely cleansed of all contaminations, and thereafter he still goes higher, to the circle of Sisumara, to relate with Lord Hari, the Personality of Godhead”-SB 2.2.24:
Below verse states the use of airplanes by mystics for interplanetary travel during the annihilation of the universe.

“At the time of the final devastation of the complete universe [the end of the duration of Brahma's life], a flame of fire emanates from the mouth of Ananta [from the bottom of the universe]. The yogi sees all the planets of the universe burning to ashes, and thus he leaves for Satyaloka by airplanes used by the great purified souls. The duration of life in Satyaloka is calculated to be 15,480,000,000,000 years”- SB 2.2.26:

Story of aerial tour of the universe by sage Kardama Muni
Further in SrimadBhagavatam, there is a mention of mystic named‘Kardama Muni’, who out of his spiritual power, created an effulgent floating city on airplane, which he used along with his wife to tour different planets of the universe. In below verse, sage Kardama Muni is exalting the beauty of his future wife to her father “Svayambhuva Manu”:
"I have heard that Visvavasu, the great Gandharva, his mind stupefied with infatuation, fell from his airplane after seeing your daughter playing with a ball on the roof of the palace, for she was indeed beautiful with her tinkling ankle bells and her eyes moving to and fro."
Seems like Visvavasu airplane was very compact and without a seat belt.

After marrying Devahuti, Kardama Muni decided to take her on a tour of the universe for which he manifested an aerial mansion that was lavishly equipped with all comforts and amenities. In below passage, sage Maitreya narrates the story of this mansion to his disciple Vidura:
"O Vidura, seeking to please his beloved wife, the sage Kardama exercised his yogic power and instantly produced an aerial mansion that could travel at his will. It was a wonderful structure, bedecked with all sorts of jewels, adorned with pillars of precious stones, and capable of yielding whatever one desired. It was equipped with every form of furniture and wealth, which tended to increase in the course of time.... With the choicest rubies set in its diamond walls, it appeared as though possessed of eyes. It was furnished with wonderful canopies and greatly valuable gates of gold. Here and there in that palace were multitudes of live swans and pigeons, as well as artificial swans and pigeons so lifelike that the real swans rose above them again and again, thinking them live birds like themselves. Thus the palace vibrated with the sounds of these birds. The castle had pleasure grounds, resting chambers, bedrooms and inner and outer yards designed with an eye to comfort. All this caused astonishment to the sage himself."

Sage Kardama Muni was himself astonished as he had not actually imagined the design of the aerial palace, instead he just gave the order for the flying mansion and in return, he received the aerial mansion from some kind of mystical universal supply system because of thehigh karma credit obtained through eons of austerities and yoga.
As the above story may sound hypothetical to you, let me explain briefly about the working of this universe according to Vedas with the help of an example.
Consider a computer software with users having different level of access to it. User can set this program into action by typing in appropriate Keycodes. These code-words would work only if the user has sufficient privileges and permissions to perform the action else the code-word is simply a useless action with no output. In other words, code-word acts like a password to perform a particular action provided he has the needed privileges to perform that action. Further, there is an admin or super-user who has the privileges to perform all actions.
Similarly in Vedic conception of universe, there is a supreme soul (God or parmatma) who has the absolute control over the functioning of the universe and then, there are individual souls who have different level of controls and power over the materialistic universe in accordance to their karma credit.
Coming back to the story of Kardama Muni, check the below verse where Kardama Muni proceed to travel different planets with his wife:
"Satisfied by his wife, he enjoyed in that aerial mansion not only on Mount Meru but in different gardens known as Vaisrambhaka, Surasana, Nandana, Puspabhadraka, and Caitrarathya, and by the Manasa-sarovara lake. He traveled in that way through the various planets, as the air passes uncontrolled in every direction. Coursing through the air in that great and splendid aerial mansion, which could fly at his will, he surpassed even the demigods."

Citaketu Watching lord Shiva destroy three airplanes
Also, there is a mention of king Citaketu who travelled in outer space on a brilliant resplendent airplane gifted to him by lord Vishnu. He saw three flying cities inhabited by demons, one stationary on airbase, another stationary in the city orbit and the third one flying in the sky. Arrows fired by Lord Shiva produced such a ferocious sunlight beams that all the three residential airplanes fell into the Indian Ocean.

Airplane gifted to King Dhruva by lord Vishnu
Then there is a mention of an earthly king ‘Dhruva’, who was gifted a beautiful airplane by none other than lord Vishnu. Below are the verses:-
“As soon as the symptoms of his liberation were manifest, he saw a very beautiful airplane coming down from the sky, as if the brilliant full moon were coming down, illuminating all the ten directions.” - [SB 4.12.19 <https://vedabase.net/sb/4/12/19/en1>]

A celestial spacecraft Out-of-this World

“Dear King Dhruva, neither your forefathers nor anyone else before you ever achieved such a transcendental planet. The planet known as Vishnuloka, where Lord Vishnu personally resides, is the highest of all. It is worshipable by the inhabitants of all other planets within the universe. Please come with us and live there eternally.”- [SB 4.12.26]

“O immortal one, this unique airplane has been sent by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is worshiped by selected prayers and who is the chief of all living entities. You are quite worthy to board such a plane.”- [SB 4.12.27]

Airplane of Python like serpent ‘Sudarsana’
Then there is a story of a huge python-like serpent that tried to kill ‘Lord Krishna’ father ‘Nanda dev’. Lord Krishna blessed his soul to transfer from a serpent-like body to a celestial being called Vidyadharas, after which lord Krishna asked him the reason for being degraded to the serpent form. He replied
"I am the well-known Vidyadhara named Sudarsana. I was very opulent and beautiful, and I used to wander freely in all directions in my airplane. Once I saw some homely sages of the lineage of Angira Muni. Proud of my beauty, I ridiculed them, and because of my sin they made me assume this lowly form."
Notice the use of word ‘airplane’ in above verse translation.

Departure of King Nriga from mother earth on celestial airplane
Similar to above story, Lord Krishna relieved the soul of king Nriga from a huge lizard to a celestial body. Flying at will, a vimana from another world came to take him to his world. Below verses depicts his experience of travelling into outer space.
“Having spoken thus, Maharaja Nriga circumambulated Lord Krishna and touched his crown to the Lord's feet. Granted permission to depart, King Nriga then boarded a wonderful celestial airplane as all the people present looked on.”

“While Dhruva Maharaja was passing through space, he saw, in succession, all the planets of the solar system, and on the path he saw all the demigods in their vimanas showering flowers upon him like rain.” (Bhagavata Purana)

“He traveled in that way through the various planets, as the air passes freely in every direction. Coursing through the air in that grand and splendid vimana, which could fly at will, he surpassed even the Devas.” (Bhagavata Purana)

King Citaratha fall from his airplane
Once upon the time, there was a brahmana named Kausika, who was gifted with sacred, mystical and powerful armor called Narayana-kavaca(Narayana is another name of lord vishnu) that made him immortal. This armor was invoked by chanting the names of the Supreme lord. However, after enjoying materialistic life, he decided to renounce his armor and gave up his physical body. At the same time, Surrounded by many beautiful ladies, Gandharva king, Citraratha happened to travel over the remains of Kausikas body. However, while passing over Kausika body, Citraratha, the King of Gandharvaloka, experienced strange interference on his vimana. Citraratha was forced to fall from the sky headfirst along with his airplane. Totally awestruck of what happened, he was advised by passing great sages named Valakhilyas to liberate the brahmana soul by throwing the kausika’s bones in the nearby River Sarasvati. Only after throwing the bones and bathing in the river saraswati, Citraratha was able to return to his abode on his effulgent airplane.

King Bali using his military airplanes to attack Devas(gods)
Vimanas were also used by demons to attack devas. Below is the description of vimana of king bali, the then ruler of the three worlds. King Bali was gifted an aerial vehicle by “maya danava” which was very similar to the one gifted to king shalva.
“For that battle the most celebrated commander in chief, Maharaja Bali, son of Virocana, was seated on a wonderful airplane named Vaihayasa. O King, this beautifully decorated airplane had been manufactured by the demon Maya and was equipped with weapons for all types of combat. It was inconceivable and indescribable. Indeed, it was sometimes visible and sometimes not. Seated in this airplane under a beautiful protective umbrella and being fanned by the best of camaras, Maharaja Bali, surrounded by his captains and commanders, appeared just like the moon rising in the evening, illuminating all directions.”

Sati watching the relatives (in airplanes) attending his father sacrificial ceremony
King Daksha was the father of Goddess sati. Unhappy about the marriage of her daughter with lord Shiva, King Daksha barred the entry of lord Shiva and sati into his kingdom. So, when king Daksha arranged a big ceremonial sacrifice and left lord Shiva and sati uninvited, sati, who was enchanted seeing her relatives traveling in beautiful vimanas to attend the ceremony, compelled her husband ‘Lord Shiva’ to let her attend the sacrifice by saying the following words:-
"O never-born, O blue-throated one, not only my relatives but also other women, dressed in nice clothes and decorated with ornaments, are going there with their husbands and friends. Just see how their flocks of white airplanes have made the entire sky very beautiful."

Divine flying chariot of lord Surya (Sun)
Surya, the Sun God, had his own divine chariot, with Aruna being the charioteer of seven horses;
These seven horses are named Gayatri, Brhati, Usnik, Jagati, Tristup, Anustup and Pankti. Lord surya is the chief graha or celestial body around which revolves all the astrological grahas(Planets). His chariot is made of 12 wheels pulled up by six/seven horses. Some scriptures says seventh horse to be the unseen one of intuitive wisdom whose presence is felt but which remains invisible. According to Vedic astrology, Chariot of sun god travels at a speed of 3,400,800 yojanas[27,206,400 miles]/second.
