Proving historicity of Krishna-Birth and names of lord krishna

Since lord Krishna birthday (Janmashtami) is coming near, I will be writing next few articles on lord Krishna. I have already posted many articles on lord Krishna. If you haven’t read them, then please go through the below link:

In this article, I will be trying to lay out the maximum evidence to prove the historicity of lord Krishna.  
Based on the archeological proof obtained from different part of India, Historians and archeologist have came to the conclusion that Krishna was the historic character and story of Mahabharata may be most certainly true. However they still suspects the divinity of lord Krishna and they consider Krishna as intelligent human having some extra ordinary technology, and the one who followed the path of dharma and karma at its best.

Now no one can prove if the stories of lord Krishna are true since the stories are more than thousands of year old. It’s just the spiritual experience and faith of the devotees that they believe lord Krishna was the supreme divine character.  
In this series of article, I will be discussing just the events related to lord Krishna. Believing it or non-believing, I leave it to you.
There are many names of lord Krishna. These names were honored to him according to the karma (Deeds) he did in his life. Some of the names are:
Gopal- ‘Go’ means Cow and ‘pal’ means protector. So, lord Krishna was given the name Gopal because he was the protector of cows.

Beside these, there are more 100 names given to lord Krishna. Only an extra-ordinary personality can be attributed with so many names.  
Now for non-believers, here is the list of questions that most devotees would like to raise?
  1)     If Krishna was a mythological character, why there was a need for so many names or why did anyone tried to derive so many times. How many names does our harry potter have?  
2)    Did you ever see any community in the world celebrating the birth or death anniversaries of any fictitious person?  If lord krishna was a mythological character, then why there was a need of celebrating his birthday(janmashtami) and that too in many countries of the world?

  3)    If he was a mythological character then why many festivals like holi, diwali etc which are related to lord Krishna, are celebrated since time unknown.
4)    If he was a mythological character and was the creation of one author then why many other authors and philosophers (Authors from outside India too) are validating the creation of that author over the course of time and don’t even care to mention that Krishna is a fictional character or the story is the fictional story.
5)    If lord Krishna was a fictional character, then how come many cities that are mentioned in Mahabharata and similar ancient texts still exist? Rarely across the world, is any city name based on the fictional story.
6)    Why the folk dance related to lord Krishna (Raas -Leela) is still demonstrated across India and outside India in countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar etc.
7)    Can our saints and sages, who have always spoken the truth since birth, can lie and claim a fictional story as true?
8)    Has been there any one fictitious character whose story has been written repeatedly by 10 to 20 authors? Stories of Krishna has been told verbally, non-verbally and literally since time immemorial by thousands of writers ,sages, poets, and authors in different languages and in different countries of the world.

  9)    Over the course of time, many high-level intellectuals and enlightened individuals have given their life in the devotion of lord Krishna. Why such individuals with great IQ (intelligence) got attracted to the fictional character?
        
India is one of the oldest civilizations on earth and never had a tradition of writing imaginary stories as our country was never short of real-life heroes. Since we are living in kali-yuga, humans are so much bewildered and trapped in materialistic illusions that their mind has lost his ability to realize what is right and what is wrong.
In this and future articles, we will try to focus on facts and evidences available to claim the historicity of lord Krishna. More than hundred years ago, one of the greatest intellectuals of India, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, wrote a remarkable book (Sri Krishna Charitra) devoted to a scientific study of lord Krishna.
To shatter the magnificent history of eastern world, many western authors came up with false theories to prove their superiority and dominance over the entire world. One of such theory was a completely baseless theory by max muller called as Aryan Invasion Theory. Many recent discoveries, archeological proof and DNA analysis have shattered the claims of Aryan Invasion Theory and have pushed back the dates of Vedic literature to much before than it were generally believed by the early philosophers and historians.
  
At the top of this page, I have already posted two articles written by different authors who tried to scientifically prove the existence of lord Krishna. In this article, we shall examine all such evidence available today to unravel the Historical significance of Krishna.
  
Historical period of Krishna
According to Srimad Bhagvatam, Krishna came on Earth at the end of the Dwapar Yug of the 7th Manvantar of the 1st Kalpa of the 51st year of the current Brahma. If you were not able to understand the time span, then let me give you the short description
Life span of Brahma is 100 years; Brahma one year of 360 days is called Kalpas; each day of Brahma is divided into 14 Manvantars; and lastly, each Manvantar is divided into 71 Maha-Yugas (Eons) with 4 Yugas each
 
Birth of Krishna
  
Currently, we are living in Kaliyuga-the last of the four Yugas. According to astronomical calculations, Kaliyuga started on 20th February 3102 BCE. Bhagvatam declares that Kaliyuga couldn't begin till the lord was residing on earth. So, if this is true then Krishna was born roughly around 3300-3200 BCE.

Note that some scriptures states that kaliyuga began when lord Krishna completed his studies and blew the conch shell given by parshuram in guru ashram.

Fortuitously, we have a large body of archaeological and literary evidence to guide us in deriving an approximate time-span for his presence. Epic Mahabharat is one of such earliest text providing explicit detailed descriptions of lord Krishna.
Now Mahabharata is not based on life of lord Krishna; instead it is based on the history of Kurus (Pandavs and Kauravs) - King of Hastinapur kingdom. So, Mahabharata contains only limited part of Krishna's life which directly or indirectly had an effect on hastinapur kingdom or other kingdom of bharat varsha (Those days India which included full of Asia). However, the most famous, adorned literary text of Mahabharata is the Bhagavad Gita which shows Krishna as more than just a normal living being. He was treated as the appointed princely diplomat (Delegate) of the Supreme God or the supreme god Himself.

Grant Morrison - the director of animation-based Mahabharata states about gita as -
The Gita, with its direct, no-nonsense guide for all the living beings, is at the very core of the Mahabharata; Whole story came into existence because lord Krishna wanted to preach Bhagavad gita to the mortal living beings of this world. The conflict between brothers in Mahabharata shows the war between duty and desire, the spiritual and the material, the war fought by human being in their life every day.

Because of the high value based teaching with an ultimate message, bhagavad gita has been adorned by intellectuals all around the world. Even the greatest of all the scientists, Albert Einstein and father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi, applauded bhagavad gita and changed their way of thinking after reading gita. In fact, Gandhi approach of satyagraha and non-violence was derived from bhagavad gita. Gandhi has also written a book on bhagavad gita.

Albert Einstein in his book said that
"When I read the Bhagavad-Gita and reflect about how God created this universe everything else seems so superfluous."  
  
In the next article, we will dig up many ancient scriptures including Jain and Buddhist literature to derive out the most probable time span of lord Krishna.
